The Dunnville Terriers finished their season with an awards banquet held Saturday at the Dunnville Legion. About 110 guests attended the dinner dance where 11 trophies were presented to 10 players.

General manager, Fred Elfner, emceed the awards ceremony. After thanking the guests who attended the meal, Elfner thanked the coaches, and equipment handlers, as well as those who helped organize and run the banquet. After thanking the team’s owners, “and everyone behind the scenes,” head coach Terry MacArthur thanked the players, calling them the team of the future.

“You were a team of players that came to us with attitudes. Through the season, those attitudes changed to commitment. We had a good ending to the season and I’m proud of you.”

Terriers forward Dan Minor received two awards, the Most Valuable Player Season award and the Most Points award. In 32 games, Minor had 21 goals and 30 assists for a total of 51 points.

“It was nice to be recognized at the end of the season,” Minor said after accepting his awards.

The evening also marked the end of the Terriers brand name. After presenting the awards, Elfner announced the team would be called the Junior Mudcats next season. Elfner said the name change was a decision of the owners, Dave Silverthorne, Ralph Walker and Tom and Rodney Minor.

Walker confirmed the team will have a new name and a new schedule this summer.
“We just need final approval from the Ontario Hockey Association.”

The team’s owners are new to the game, so to speak, having just started the procedure to buy the Terriers in January. Walker said the partnership has been going well.

“It’s pretty new to us, but we know what has to be done. With four of us we can do more scouting, and between us, we know all the hometown hockey boys.”

Walker said he looks forward to having people in town ask how they can help the team.
“We’re always looking for new ideas. We want it to be a community-oriented team.”

MacArthur came on as coach late in the season. He said he gives credit to Dave Dunham, the Terriers original owner when the club formed in the 1973 season, for what the team still is today.

“Dave was all for the kids. He would go that extra mile, if a kid couldn’t sign up for some reason, he made sure they could. The kids learned that winning isn’t everything, but how hard you try to win is.”
