Terriers Playoff Season Ended By Dundas Blues
The Junior C Dunnville Terriers went 0-3 against the Dundas Blues last week. The first defeat came Tuesday February 9, when the Blues descended on the Terriers on Dundas home ice to hand them a resounding 9-4 defeat. On Wednesday February 10, Dunnville took a 5-2 loss against the same team at home. They followed that up with a 4-2 loss in an away game Saturday February 13.
Saturday’s match started promisingly enough, with Dunnville’s Duncan Minor scoring a power play goal on a feed from Dustin Demoe and Dan Minor before the halfway mark of the first.
But Dundas’ BJ Caco was not to be deterred and tied the game at 1 with a shorthanded, unassisted goal 8:13 into the second frame. The Blues took the lead with Robert Bentivegna’s unassisted powerplay goal just under five minutes into the third period. Though Dunnville came back briefly to send Duncan Minor into Dundas’ end to beat the team’s goalie on an unassisted play late in the game and bring the score to a 2-2 tie, Dundas shut the door on Dunnville’s hopes of a comeback with another goal from Bentivegna, assisted by Andrew Kolodzey and Trevor Atkinson with two and a half minutes remaining. Kolodzey scored his own powerplay, emptynetter goal on a feed from Bentivegna at 19:34 of the third.
Both teams were closely aligned in penalty minutes in Saturday’s game, with Dunnville drawing 14 minutes on seven infractions and Dundas going to the box for 16 minutes on eight infractions. Dundas bested Dunnville in shots on net, shooting 33 while Dunnville shot 27.
The first and second periods of Wednesday’s game -as usual – weren’t the problem for the Terriers, who kept pace after Dundas’ Mike Peters scored the first goal of the match on a feed from Kevin Dowling with under a minute left in the frame. Dunnville came back to score two and take the lead in the second, courtesy of Tanner McGowan’s goal on an assist from Ryan Dear just over one minute into the period, and Jared Murphy’s powerplay effort, assisted by Austin Douglas at 3:39. But it was all Dundas after that, as the Blues warmed up near the end of the second and sent Bentivegna into Dunnville’s end to score on a feed from Dylan Gilbert and Mike Tache, tying the score at 2. The team eir onslaught in the third, with D.J. McConnell taking Dowling’s second assist of the night to score 7:16 into the frame. The team’s next goal came from Derek Searle on an assist from the invaluable Robert Bentivegna and Dylan Gilbert within the last five minutes of the match. Dowling capped the victory with his own empty net goal on an assist from McConnell with under 30 seconds left.
Dunnville’s loss came as they more than quadrupled Dundas in penalty minutes, taking 44 minutes on 12 infractions to Dundas’ 10 minutes on seven infractions. Dunnville’s Curtis Naylor took the first penalty of the game, a two-minute interference call 4:32 into the first. McGowan went to the box for hooking in the last six minutes of the frame, while Dundas’ Dylan Gilbert was penalized two minutes for roughing after the whistle at the same time. In the last minute of that period, Dunnville’s Jared Murphy and Dundas’ Jonathan Cox each went to the box for two minutes for slashing and roughing after the whistle, respectively, at 19:06.
The second period brought much physical play from both teams, with Dundas’ Andrew Cebulak drew an interference call 1:44 into the frame, before Dunnville’s Mitch Butler would take a 10-minute penalty at 8:19 for an abuse of officials misconduct. Dundas’ Zac Cosentino would take two minutes for checking from behind and a game misconduct at the same time. While both Jason Dear and Nolan Speakman of Dunnville would go to the box for tripping minutes later. Dundas’ Caco would follow his teammate and be called for checking from behind and a game misconduct in the dying minutes of the second frame, before Dunnville’s Taylor Schwoob would be called for tripping and Dan Minor for slashing within the last four minutes. All of the third period’s penalties went to Dunnville as McGowan was penalized 10 minutes for inciting an opponent and drew a gross misconduct for playing without a helmet 16:40 into the third. In the last 30 seconds of that game, Dunnville’s Duncan Minor and Chad Beal were penalized for abuse of officials misconducts, with Minor drawing 10 minutes and Beal a game misconduct.
Dundas crushed Dunnville in shots, taking 44 to the Terriers 26.
Tuesday’s 9-4 loss came as a result of another third period meltdown.
Though the Terriers’ Duncan Minor scored a power play goal on a feed from Dustin Demoe and Dan Minor before the halfway mark of the first frame, Dundas’ Caco came back to score a short-handed, unassisted goal in the second. The team took a 2-1 lead 4:52 into the third, when Bentivegna scored an unassisted power play goal.
Dunnville tied the score at 2, with Minor scoring his second goal of the night on an unassisted effort with just over five minutes left.
But it wasn’t enough to catch Dundas, who sent Bentivegna in to Dunnville’s end (assisted by Kolodzey and Atkinson) to break the tie. Dundas added insurance with Kolodzey’s powerplay, empty net goal assisted by Bentivegna with under 30 seconds left.
The two teams were closely aligned in shots -Dunnville’s 27 to Dundas’ 33 -and penalty minutes (Dunnville had 14 minutes on seven infractions, while Dundas had 16 minutes on eight infractions).
