Terriers Win Against Caledonia
December 16, 2009. The Dunnville Terriers collected their second win of the season against Caledonia this past Friday. The Terriers played Caledonia in their arena more than a week ago and played the Corvairs into overtime. Unfortunately for Dunnville they lost the overtime game which gave them that much more motivation to come out and play hard this time around.
Dunnville got the lead early in the game when Terriers number 26, Ryan Dear, took a pass from teammates Dan Minor, captain of the Terriers, and number 8, Jason Dear, and scored on the Caledonia net. The early goal brought the crowd right into the game giving Dunnville a sixth man, by way of crowd energy, throughout the contest.
The Terriers let the goal go straight to their legs as they skated even harder after notching the marker trying to pot another tally. The hard play earned Dunnville a few chances on the power-play as the period went on but also contributed to the Terriers taking three penalties of their own in the first frame. They killed off all the chances for Caledonia on the power-play with ease saving their lead going into the first intermission.
The second period started much as the first ended, with Dunnville getting a power-play less than three minutes into the second period. The man-advantage turned out to be anything but as the Corvairs stole the puck on a half-break and took the disc straight to the back of the Dunnville net. Caledonia’s Brent Lowry potted the shorthanded marker for his team.
The Terriers, led by Captain Dan Minor, didn’t let the goal against startle them however and they went back to work on the ice. Less than three minutes later Dunnville restored their one goal lead on another power-play. Terriers number 14, Curtis Naylor, took a nice feed from Tanner McGowan and goaltender Tyler Gilbertson and burried Dunnville’s second goal of the game. Dunnville’s number 15, Chris Furneaux, followed suite on another man advantage less than three minutes later and put Dunnville up by two goals headed into the third and final period.
Both teams skated hard and checked harder for the first 15 minutes of the third period with neither club notching a marker. Caledonia refused to go away and lay down and fought back to earn themselves a power-play with a little over 3:30 left in the third. They scored on that chance drawing the score to 3 to 2 with three minutes left.
Dunnville didn’t let the Corvairs get much farther as 20 seconds later they scored a shorthanded marker to restore the two goal lead. The final score was 4 to 2. Terriers goalie Gilbertson stopped 38 of 40 shots put on his net while the Terriers went 2 for 6 on the power-play.
The Terriers play has been much better of late with this being their second win in three weeks and their last contest against Caledonia going to overtime. The game was filled with penalties and infractions with a total of 22 minor penalties called between the two teams.
The Terriers collected nine shots on Caledonia in the first period, another nine in the second and an additional four in the third, scoring on four of those attempts. Caledonia had 12 shots in the first, 15 in the second period and 13 in the final frame. Caledonia scored once on the powerplay out of 10 chances with both teams scoring one shorthander.
The Terrier’s next game comes this Friday when Chippawa visits Dunnville at 8 p. m.
